I sometimes wonder what brings people to my page, what is it that burns inside that they would like answers to. Sometimes I find out and begin to work with clients on a journey of self-discovery. Sometimes I never find out.

What I know is that choosing a therapist/counsellor is a big decision. It is something that is fraught with unknowns: What will she think of me? Will I get the answers I need? Will it even help?

These questions are at the heart of, I believe, almost every client I have worked with. We don’t know what we don’t know. And we don’t know how a counsellor might help us until we are sitting in front of them. It can be a scary proposition when we’re trying to deal with something that is bothering us, that we are trying to sort out.

So how do we start when we feel a little scared?

The million dollar question

To start or not to start, that is the question (with apologies to Shakespeare).

Ultimately, we have to decide whether we are willing to step into the ring and face the battle within ourselves. Okay, that sounds a little extreme and perhaps hostile, but there is a ring of truth to it. When things aren’t working for us in our lives, or when a relationship is a struggle, or when we just can’t shake an awful feeling, we do need to try something different.

Famously, Einstein said, “You can’t solve a problem with the same mind that created it.”

The good news is we all have an innate capacity to solve the problems in our life.

An effective way to solve a problem is to have new insight, a new mind, so that you can begin to see a new way forward, a way that can shift your perspective. With new insight you can become confident in the ring as you face the issues plaguing you with the bonus of having someone on your side to navigate it.

This is why I do what I do. To help people navigate the parts of themselves that need tending to.

What do you need tending to?
