About Me

I’m non-judgmental

I believe that there are reasons for the choices you’ve made. I strive for non-judgment because I know that life is complex, uncertain and nuanced and whatever life experiences you have had, I assume you are working from the best intentions to be the person you want to be. Life is challenging and risky. Coming from a place of non-judgment is the foundation for curiosity and compassion.

I’m biased

I’m biased about the approaches I think work, and don’t work, in life, relationships, and healing. I will share them with you as we work in partnership. Being biased about approaches doesn’t mean I believe there’s only one way of going about solutions to problems; it’s more like a roadmap. As we talk together, you can help me understand your thoughts about what’s working and what’s not. Throughout the process, I will check in with you to get your feedback on what seems to help make things better and will tweak what doesn’t, since you are the expert on your own life. As “fellow travelers” walking a path together, we can figure out what will work best to help gain new perspectives on your life issues.

I’m calm

It can be awkward to begin talking about issues and concerns with a counsellor. My aim is to try to help make this a natural and free-flowing experience. Since I myself have been in therapy, I am aware of how difficult it can be to bring up painful topics. My intention is to be warm and calm as we interact with one another. I won’t be overly formal with you and I will use plain language in our interactions. While my ethics and use of interventions are clinical in nature and designed for your benefit, my hope is to provide a setting in which you feel comfortable to share what is on your mind.

I’m empathic

I’m empathic about you and your concerns. It can feel scary and uncertain to write that email, fill out the form, or make a call and ask for help.  It can feel shameful, having a belief that "I should've figured this out by now." But that's not true. We can't always see everything. I understand the fear and uncertainty. And I respect your courage in taking this step.

I get it

I’ve been in the client seat multiple times as I've faced significant life challenges and overcome major trauma. I know how hard it can be to come and talk about personal issues to someone you are just meeting. I understand how vulnerable it is to share what is troubling you, hoping I can help you untangle it. Because of my experience being in the “client chair,” I understand the courage it takes to book an appointment and show up to talk about what is bothering you. These are personal matters. I truly get it.
